President’s Message: Hunting season is over now (unfortunately as ducks seemed to appear out of nowhere the last weekend of the season) and the spring hunt test season is here. It’s time to start training to get ready for hunt tests. There are several tests in the area and I encourage everybody to get out there and help support the other local HRC clubs. Our first training day of the year was a success. Many people showed up and helped each other out. It was a beautiful day and it was great to see so many people come out. John Wallace did a great job setting this up. There are sure to be more of training days coming up in the near future. This is a great way to meet other people and get some help with training your dog. We will be letting everybody know when/where the next one will be so keep watching for the announcements. Our own hunt test is fast approaching as well, March 15-16. The test will be in Bowie again as it has been the past few years. Kyle Krause has been working very hard as Hunt Test Chairman. As well, Becky Hansen is all over the job of Hunt Test Secretary. Entries for the Hunt Test can now be made at www.huntsecretary.com . Our premium is also posted on the club website. Patty Collins has taken up the position of raffle chair and is doing a great job. I can’t say enough about how much Patty has done to make this one of the best raffles we’ve ever had. Many companies have agreed to help us out. Check out our club website to see all of the great sponsors that we have for our hunt test. Several people have already volunteered to help out at the hunt test and we very much appreciate that. We can still use some more help, however. We still need started marshals and a started gunner, a seasoned marshal as well as people to help set-up, tear down, serve food along with many other miscellaneous tasks. It’s usually as much, if not more fun than work. If you wish to help, please let Kyle or myself know. Dinner will be provided Friday evening for anybody that helps set up on Friday afternoon. Don’t forget our next meeting is Thursday February 21st at Spring Creek BBQ (Preston and 635) at 7:00 pm. We will be presenting and voting on a proposed running rule change at the meeting. I look forward to seeing everybody this Spring. Good luck to all. See you in the field. Seth Kelly
Take home the Beretta shooting glasses and T-shirt and head straight to Elm Fork Shooting Park and you will soon be our next Top Gun Champion! For the avid hunters who are already planning next year’s hunts, Richard Pulvino and Retriever Specialties have donated an awesome two man duck hunt with lodging just one mile from the boat ramp on Cooper Lake. To get you in hunt mode, you will want the T-shirt, cap, mallard drake call and autographed DVD from The Duck Commander Phil Robertson, and hunting and shooting gear from McClelland Gun Shop. Serious hunters want to wear the best and Orvis will have you outfitted in the Beretta Xtrema parka, pants, shirt and blind bag. Bobby Geckler and Gemco Manufacturing have donated a nice Cutt-down Game Calls Series 1 X2 duck call, a sure fit for the Oak Creek Kennel’s deluxe lanyard, and just what you need to win the next duck calling contest. Make sure you put your tickets in the bucket for the Sportstand dog platform donated by John Wallace, Seth Kelly and Sportstand (your dog will thank you for that when you’re hunting in freezing water). You can make that next duck hunt report to your friends from the Sony/Ericsson cell phone donated by Ericsson’s Verizon Sales Team. Go shopping with the several Cabela’s gift certificates donated by RLK Engineering and HRCH UH Kanatis Sylus’ Early Jake MH. You can finally get that Will prepared with the legal services donated by The Shepherd Law Firm. And for the readers, there are several annual subscriptions to Lone Star Outdoor News, your source for the most current hunting and fishing information. We have some exciting must haves for the ladies this year, such as a wonderful gift certificate from She Safari, a clothing manufacturer with a full line of women’s safari, upland and hunting apparel. There’s also custom made jewelry donated by Holman Design Group. For the home there is a beautiful Wild Wings regulator clock donated by Dale Flenthrope. If you can’t get enough of that delicious barbeque this weekend, put some tickets in the "For the Love of Smoke" bucket and take home some of Jimmy’s famous barbeque. You will also want to put some tickets in the bucket for the custom made cutting board donated by Jeff Wills. Please remember our generous donors and sponsors and be sure to do business with them throughout the year. It is our way of saying, “Thank you for supporting the Lone Star HRC.” Without them, these events would not be possible and we appreciate their support. Have fun! Patty Collins
