The Monthly Newsletter of the Lone Star Hunting Retriever Club

President’s Message:
I’d like to start by apologizing for the delay between FETCH articles this spring.  Despite my lapse in writing these, there has been plenty going on.

Our annual Top Dog/Fun Hunt was held on May 30th.  There was good turn out with about 25 dogs and handlers participating.  Everybody enjoyed themselves.  For those of you that did not make it, you missed a good time.  The judges set up challenging, yet straight forward and fair tests to separate the Top Dogs from the crowd.  We had shot flyers for all of the dogs as well.

Congratulations to Bruce Potter and Graci for winning the Top Dog - Finished honors this year.  Graci ran an almost flawless test to win the judges over and take the Top Dog title.

Mark Kawalek and Max edged out the competition to win the Top Dog - Seasoned title for 2009.  Max did a great job and kept the rest of the competition at bay to take this year’s title.

Congratulations to both Bruce and Graci and Mark and Max on a job well done.  Nice work, fellas.

Everybody else had fun and pitched in to help out and keep things moving smoothly.  Thanks to everybody that helped.  We’d like to extend our appreciation to Mr. and Mrs. Don Smith for picking up the food for lunch, Mike and Diann Brackin for bringing dessert (excellent as always), Kyle Krause and Kevin Buckley for bringing their equipment and providing poppers, Sarah Krause for keeping track of the participants and paperwork, John Wallace for his mostly dead-eye dispensing of the shot flyers, Carl Petrey for making sure everything got paid for and/or reimbursed  appropriately, Kyle Krause and Dale Flenthrope for judging and Duke Robertson for picking up and delivering the ducks.  I think that covers everybody.  I apologize if I left anybody out.

We’ve also had some good training days this Spring.  John Wallace has done a fine job keeping things interesting and organizing our training days.  Aside from a rain delay or two, these training days have been a good time.  Many people have shown up to help each other out.

We will be having more training days coming up soon.  With the weather heating up, we will be starting early.  More details to come as we nail down some dates.  I look forward to seeing everybody throughout the summer.

The national HRC meeting is coming up in Memphis on June 12-13.  John Wallace will be representing our club at the meeting and will carry our vote on issues that arise at the meeting.  We will report on the goings-on of the national meeting at our next regular meeting this month.

Summer has now arrived and with it the Texas heat.  With heat comes the danger of over-working and over-heating our dogs.  Especially early on before they’ve had a chance to somewhat adapt to it.  But that’s not to say it’s not a concern all through the summer.  Our best friends can’t cool down as quickly as us and overheating can occur very quickly.  Please be aware of the heat and keep yourself and your dogs safe.

Until next time, good luck to all.  See you in the field.

Seth Kelly, President
